我的italki 之旅: 学生- 社区辅导- 专业老师

xiaolei2其实我最初来italki 是为了提高我的英语。刚加入时,我就发现这真是一个好地方,在这里我找到了很多语言交换伙伴,他们帮我提高英语,我帮助他们学汉语。我和他们在skype上沟通,也经常参与italki上的问题回答和讨论板上的互动。

我经常会碰到一些学外语的初学者,他们感觉我有能力和热情来帮助初学者。在italki上做语言交换的确不错,但我发现让语言交换有效成功,必须有两个前提:一是,双方都很强的学习愿望和动机,二是,双方都有大量的时间来做交换语言。因此,有针对性的语言辅导会更有效。实际上,我本来就是语言教师,我有教中国孩子英语的经验,所以我能够很好地理解以英语为母语的人学汉语时会犯的错误和困难。这时,我决定申请成为italki上的社区辅导老师,把教英语中的经验用到教汉语上面。

    做社区辅导的时候,我大多数的学生都来自美国。(我想这可能是因为两边的时差刚好吻合我们教于学的时间需求。)其中一个学生始终认为我可以成为一个专业的汉语老师,因为他很喜欢我的教学风格,他感觉我有做一个优秀网络老师的潜能和天赋。由于他的鼓励,我决定投入到对外汉语教学的研究中。在拿到了对外汉语教师资格证后,我申请成为了职业教师。现在我能够提供专业的课,我既使用正式的汉语课本,也会自己制作编写一些教学材料。我非常喜欢创作符合学生需求和兴趣的材料,同时把课本作为语法大纲的参考资料。

我很喜欢接触来自世界各地的新学生。我尤其喜欢教授一对一个性化的语言辅导课,由于学生来自世界各地,每个人的需求和文化背景都不一样,所以每堂辅导课都会不一样。这有些挑战,所以很有趣,同时我也能了解到不同的文化。 这和专注于课本千篇一律的正规教学模式是很不一样的。

每当我从学生那里得到积极的反馈时,我都非常有成就感,因为我帮助他们达到了他们的语言目标。这也是我为什么喜欢在italki上教语言的原因。

My italki Journey – from Student to Community Tutor to Professional Teacher
 

I actually started off on italki as a student who wanted to improve my English.  When I first joined, I found that it was a great place to find online language exchange partners who were interested in learning Chinese and could also help teach me English.  I would communicate with language exchange friends over SKYPE and would frequently participate on the italki Discussion and Answers forums.  I would often meet a lot of beginning students who wanted to learn a new language and felt that I had the ability and desire to help these beginning students. Doing language exchange on italki was great, but I found that it only worked well if both sides were very motivated and had a lot of free time to learn a language. So I realized a bit of structured and prepared tutoring would be more helpful to beginning learners. I actually had previous experience teaching teenage students English before, so I have a good understanding of the difficulty that English speakers would have in Chinese. It was at this time that I decided to take the next step and apply to become a Community Tutor.  

As a Community Tutor, most of my students came from the U.S. ( I think it was because the time difference actually fit our schedules).  One of my students kept on saying that I should become a Professional Teacher because he really enjoyed my teaching style and felt that I had the talent and potential to really be a great online teacher.  It was because of his encouragement that I decided to pursue Teaching Chinese as a Second Language studies.  After obtaining my TCSL certification, I applied to become a Professional Teacher and currently offer professional coursework in which I teach using both formal textbooks and self-created teaching materials.  I especially enjoy making my own materials that are suitable to every learner’s need and interest, using textbooks as a reference of grammar syllabus. 

There are so many reasons why I like teaching (and learning) on italki.  These include:

– (as a teacher) Having a flexible teaching schedule as an online teacher.  It’s great that I can teach as much or as little as I want.
– (as a teacher) Having the freedom to teach in your own way
–  (as a teacher) The student feedback oriented evaluation system (rather than a test-oriented evaluation system)
– (as a teacher) The ability to focus and tailor your teaching methodology to individual students
– (for students) The ability to pick and choose your teacher
  (for all) the helpful and free Notebooks, Answers and Discussions forums where students and teachers from all over the world can share ideas.
