My name is Myron. I’m a web design director for a university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States.
I grew up in a bilingual house, which I guess was the underlying reason why I have a big interest in foreign languages. I do not remember what sparked my interest in learning a language other than the two I knew for a very long time; I can say, however, that when I was given the opportunity to study one in school, I jumped at the chance. And I never looked back.
I found out about italki while watching an Italian-language video on YouTube. I was naturally curious—this website would give me the opportunity to connect with native speakers of a language I’m interested in. I understand if others think that a classroom setting is the ideal way for them to learn to speaking a foreign tongue, it is just not for me anymore.
I took advantage of the website’s trial sessions, with two tutors in French and one in Italian. I am quite confident with French and used it as a way to ease me into the italki experience.
I was not disappointed—the tutors were all very patient and welcoming. They corrected my mistakes, showed me better ways of speaking and expressing myself, and gave me a good deal of advice for the future.
At the end of the trial sessions, I knew I was hooked. I purchased a few packages from these same tutors, and continue to see them on a regular basis. I’m progressing quite well, perhaps because I am as enthusiastic about the experience as the people who are teaching me their respective languages.
One of the best things about the website is that you can try out as many tutors and professional teachers as you can. This is very different from learning in a language school, where you are stuck with one tutor until the end of the course. Here, if for whatever reason you are not feeling someone’s method of teaching, you can switch to someone else with very few issues. I was lucky: The first few people I had lessons with, ended up being my present-day tutors. It may or may not happen with you, and that’s the beauty of italki and having choices.
It was also through italki that I made a few language partners. They are people from other parts of the world that would like to learn English—my Mother Tongue. Because I am interested in their language as well, we are able to find ways on assisting each other become better.
So for those of you contemplating about joining italki, I encourage you to do so. Take a few trial sessions and some professional lessons. You’ll be surprised at how much you’ll learn.
