It’s been 2 weeks since I left italki, I had a really great time there. I loved the cozy and comfortable environment, super nice people, and of course, all the of fun activities and interesting work duties. Time passed quickly, I still remember the time I received Ilar’s email for the internship at the beginning of summer, and now it’s almost winter.
My first impression of italki – whenever someone enters a completely new environment, you naturally feel a bit nervous and uneasy as you have to learn to get along with new people. I am no different. Fortunately, my colleagues were really easy to get along with. On the first day of my internship, Andrew taught me how to deal with the anxiety. It was his friendly appearance left a good first impression on me. Afterwards, Charles taught all the new interns how to deal with our new daily tasks. Improving while learning! It was great to be able to learn something new everyday at work.
One of the reason I chose italki was because I myself am a language learning enthusiast. People here are from different countries all over the world. I had plenty of opportunities to practice my English because that was the main language that everyone communicated in. Every Thursday we had our Services Department Meeting and these weekly meetings especially those times when we came up with some great ideas and solutions through the collective brainstorming of our team members! Everyone was a walking VOA (Voice of America) Standard English for me since I was preparing exams while doing the internship. I enjoyed listening to them speaking and trying to figure out what the topic was about.
Our “Mark Zuckerbergs” were both very low-key but really nice! I never knew that Kevin was actually one of the co-founders of the company! He would always come to these meetings and sit in a corner, listening and analyzing everything. I always thought that he was someone from HR who was thoughtful and good at expressing ideas for the first 3 weeks until one day, the other intern told me the truth, and I was shocked.
Thank you Jim, for assigning me so many interesting tasks during this period. Solidifying the foundation through daily work and gaining more experience from extra practice. I love the team lunch every time, we knew each other more through this.
I also took part in many company activities, Ilar and Edie from HR always had really amazing ideas for activities! it had been only a few days since I started to work there, then I joined “Lunch for Everyone” (I think it’s the name for that activity?), and was able to get to know colleagues from other departments because of that.
I was also lucky to have the opportunity to take part in the yearly company trip. It was a hot summer and we went to a Moganshan summer resort, tried kayaking, and went to KTV together!
On the last night of the trip, we had a company meeting which really left a lasting impression. The atmosphere was so lively that I would say this was the best meeting I’ve ever attended. Kevin told us about the history of italki and how they overcame so many difficulties, I loved this kind of speech because what they said were true and inspiring. Seeing is believing.
3 months passed quickly, but the feelings can’t be expressed in a few words. I am still having lessons on italki. My teacher and I have become friends now. The platform of italki and the company itself have given me so many beautiful memories and I sincerely hope it will be much better in the future.
Finally, thanks to all my colleagues in italki, especially the Service Team!
